Wasabi Sushi – Bareeq Al Shatti

Wasabi Sushi - Bareeq Al Shatti

Wasabi Sushi is a sushi restaurant located in Bareeq Al Shatti (Telephone: 2469 9490) directly opposite of B+F Roadside Diner. We reviewed it a few years ago, but thought we’ll just do another review for it.

Wasabi is a small restaurant with only about six tables and four stools near the window. However, it is usually not too difficult to get a table at all at this place as few people still go to it even after all these years. For this review we came around 8pm on a working day and half the tables were taken. The place is usually quiet and intimate.

Wasabi claims to be a Japanese restaurant, but it does not serve any Japanese food besides sushi. The menu of Wasabi has different categories of American-style sushi including fried maki, Phili maki (has Philadelphia cheese), hand rolled sushi, sashmi, soups and salads.

During this visit we ordered a variety of maki rolls. We had Spicy Maguro Hoso Maki (RO 3.900) which was basically a spicy tuna maki, Black Puppies (RO 4.200) which had crab, avocado, cucumber, asparagus,  cheese and was topped with black roe and Japanese mayo, Dragon Roll (RO 5.900) which had tempura prawns, avocado, tuna, salmon roasted eel, flying fish roe, teriyaki sauce, crab, and Japanese mayo, California Roll (RO 4.500) which had prawns, avocado, cucumber, Japanese mayo, flying fish roe, and crab, and Shaki Tizu Maki (RO 5.300) which had salmon, cucumber, avocado, and sprinkled with black sesame seeds and Japanese mayo.

I enjoyed all the rolls we had on this visit, but I have to say that my favourites were the Spicy Tuna (which had a really nice kick), Dragon Rolls, and Black Puppies.

Unfortunately, Wasabi does not serve any desserts. For drinks, Wasabi serves only soft drinks and tea.

In total we ordered 5 rolls, 2 teas, and 1 water bottle. Our bill total came to around RO 28.

The service at Wasabi was good, our food came quickly and exactly as ordered.

Wasabi might not have a menu as extensive as that of Tokyo Taro or the Japanese menu of 360, but it is still a great option for a quick American-style sushi fix that is not too expensive and more easily accessible than other sushi restaurants. The quality of the sushi, the portions, and the price of Wasabi Sushi are all really good, but it would certainly be a more attractive restaurant if it had some interesting starters, drinks, and desserts.

I enjoyed the food at Wasabi and would recommend it for those looking for non-traditional American style sushi.
